Detoxing: all hype or necessity?
Detoxing the skin is definitely on-trend but do we really need to detox all the time? The answer is no. Detoxing the skin can be interpreted in many different ways. What I’m talking about is the trends, using products with the term detox in them. Most commonly charcoal or clay-based products claim to detox the skin by drawing impurities out of the skin, but with that, they tend to also draw out the good stuff, like your skin’s natural oils and cause irritation or dryness.
Another thing to consider is if your skin needs to be detoxed at all? I believe that unless you have been using all the wrong skincare products there’s no reason to go through a skin detox. If you do need to detox there is a right way to do it, by removing harmful products that may be in your home regimens such as over the counter products or products that were incorrectly recommended. Get all those icky products out of your bathrooms and visit an esthi! With my clients, I recommend they begin their new skincare routine with a super simple three-step system in order to detox from the old and help introduce the new. From there, we can see what your skin actually needs and not what improper products are causing. Using the wrong products can cause more harm and issues than good.
Once you get on a consistent personalized regimen you only need to switch products around for a few reasons, if at all. One example would be switching seasons, just like clothes we need different layers for different temperatures. Depending on your skin type you may need to switch your moisturizers, or in some cases, your cleansers. A second example would be lifestyle changes; sometimes new medications, moving to a new climate, or hormonal changes can cause changes in your skin. With that being said, always visit your esthetician if you think you may need to make any changes.
These days, with social media ruling our every move, it’s easy to get swept up with whatever your favorite influencer is using or “recommending”. It’s easy to just follow along, but typically, these people aren’t educated in skincare, carry no licenses, and usually are getting paid to recommend these products. Always remember that skincare isn’t one size fits all, what works for her may not work for you.
But thankfully estheticians exist! Yay! We live, breathe, and love everything skincare. We love helping you work toward and reach your skin goals. We’re here to help and remind you that not everything you see online is true. Unlike influencers, we don’t guess what you need, we take the time to get to know you, your skin, and your lifestyle. That way we can educate you and make a plan to set you on the right track and banish any concerns you may have!
