Brow Makeup & Skin Types

You may have wondered recently why there’s so many options for just brow makeup. Some products also help specific hair concerns in the brows, but I’ll cover that another time.

Every skin type needs a different regimen specific to its concerns and maintenance. This also applies to the brow area and using different make-up products to fit your needs.

Normal/Combo: If you’re normal or combination skin, you’re typically not too oily or too dry. And have a small/medium pore size. Combination may have some excess oil on the t-zone and may have slightly larger pores there.

If this is you, your skin is probably pretty easy to work with. Which means you have options in the brow makeup aisle. You can focus on other benefits of makeup that won’t affect the skin. Example: sparse areas, skill level, and how much time you have for your routine.

Product Recommendation: Since you really could use anything, I suggest seeing a brow artist. They can suggest what’s right for your brows in particular. However, a fiber brow gel is my favorite for any client!

Dry Skin: Dry skin is just as it sounds: dry. You lack oil in your skin and have smaller pores. Now, I'm not saying you’re not using all the moisturizers and you may be a glazed donut. But with this skin type slurps that moisture down and can leave you a bit dryer hours from your am routine. So finding a hydrating brow product can be beneficial to your brow hairs and skin. This would be a pomade type product or creamy brow pencils. I would also recommend a brow oil or some type of hydration to be used when doing your skincare.

Product Recommendation: Chella Brow Pencil— they have a ton of shades (9) to choose from and are creamy.

Oily Skin: This skin type is oily all over the face with larger pores. The brows usually luck out though the excess oil keeps them hydrated. My go-to product for this skin type is a powder, it helps to wick away excess oil and in turn stays put well. Brow gels can also work, preferably a fiber gel because they tend to be “drier” and “set” when dry. However, most brow gels and brow soaps that dry and harden work with this skin type. But, brow soaps may soften with the oil throughout the day.

Product Recommendation: Mirabella Brow Powder is my current favorite brow powder. It lasts forever and is quite pigmented.

Seasons can also affect what products you decide to use. In my area, summer gets hot, like really hot. So I have more clients grabbing powders during that season as we sweat more. A drier climate may require a more hydrating product or a secondary regimen to keep the brows hydrated.

Skill level will also affect your choice when shopping for the perfect product. If you’re new to brow makeup, start cheap and practice. The best starter product is a clear brow gel or brow pencil.
