Brow Makeup & Skin Types

Every skin type needs a different regimen specific to its concerns and maintenance. This also applies to the brow area and using different make-up products to fit their needs and skin. Here are my go-tos and why:

Normal/Combo: This skin type is definitely the easiest to work with and thankfully it is the majority. Since they don’t have specific concerns we need to counter, unless they’re extra oily in that t-zone (see oily skin for that recommendation). But, weather, skill level, and time come into play. Give a brief consultation getting to know your client during their service. This can help you direct them to their perfect product for them!

Dry Skin: This skin type can be tricky when it comes to flakey patches that can even collect in areas like the brows. If that’s the case I recommend proper exfoliation and a hydrating serum to help heal the brows before recommending products. If they have their dry skin as under control as possible, my go to would be a non drying pomade or a brow pencil. Pomades can be hydrating but can also be moisture wicking, so double check what you’re carrying or when you’re researching. Pencils can be used on most skin types and are my go-to for anyone inexperienced or in a hurry.

Oily Skin: This skin type can be frustrating for the client, especially when they’re using the wrong product. Of course, this skin type also needs specific skincare to keep it regulated. The brows usually luck out when oily skin is concerned because it's kept well hydrated. My go-to product for this skin type is a powder, it helps to wick away excess oil and in turn stays put well. Brow gels can also work for this skin type, preferably a fiber gel because they tend to be “drier” and “set” when dry.

Seasons can also affect what products your client may need. In my area, summer gets hot, like really hot. So I have more clients grabbing powders during that season as we sweat more. A drier climate may require a more hydrating product or a secondary regimen to keep the brows hydrated.

Skill level will also affect your recommendation, sending a newbie home with a pomade, concealer, and brushes will only set them up for failure. When I have a client new to filling in her brows, I always grab a pencil, they’re easy to use and great for practice.
